Ribault vs Terry Parker at Terry Parker High School
The exhbition between the Trojans and Braves had a serious feel about it. That stemmed from the head coaches as both Ribault’s coach Kelvin Smith and Parker’s coach Char-ron Dorsey elected to play an entire game with game-like rules. It made for one of the more exciting spring football matchups as both teams showed big play material.
On offense, Ribault was led by rising sophomore quarterback Chris Calhoun. Calhoun started as a freshman for Ribault last year and will use that experience to guide his team in year two. He was able to connect with his big target at Tight End Chris Johnson on several plays in the game.
Johnson was the first 8th grader in our area to receive a division-I football offer three years ago. He continues to add offers to his list and will play a key role on offense at tight end and defense at defensive end. .
However Terry Parker looked good on defense as well. They were able to stall Ribault drives with big plays on 3rd and 4th downs. A big fourth down stop by #10 Javis Brooks (rising sophomore) on one drive and a big sack by #44 Malcom Drayton (rising senior) on another drive showed that the Braves have players on defense with varied experience that can make impact plays.
Ribault’s weapons this year will come from their backfield. A deadly mixture of runner’s in their elixir include rising junior Matranius Mack who can take it the distance at any time and from any point on the field. Josh Jones, a great down hill runner and change of pace back. Also in the mix is big Javari Williams, who is a brusing power back.
Ribault would build a 17-0 lead in the third quarter as Calhoun hit Johnson for a touchdown. A short touchdown run and two point conversion, coupled with a safety gave the Trojans a decided advantage heading into the fourth.
Terry Parker struggled on offense ( missing some key starters), but showed flashes of playmaking ability with some of their players. Wide Receiver Tyrone Williams made a beautiful catch down the sideline which brought the crowd to its feet. He also made a vicious hit on special teams that showed his versatility as an impact player at multiple positions.
Parker would finally get on the board in the fourth quarter when Tabari Rollins burst a long touchdown run down the left side-line as Parker faught their way back into the game.
The game would end with Ribault taking the victory 17-6, but both teams came away from the contest with positive optimism about the fall. Ribault and Terry Parker both have several rising sophomores and juniors starting for them. The key to both teams is how fast the young players can mature and adapt to the high school game.
Key additions can also be a factor as defensive back Cedric Woodson showed that he can make instant big plays in games for Ribault. Parker will see what they truy have when some of their new potential starters suit up like new comers Artis Maddox, and Jajuan Turner.
Parker opens the season against Sandalwood while Ribault takes on Creekside.
