Head Coach Yolanda Bronston would lead a very young Lady Spartans team to a 16-9 record in their 2018-2019 season. The team would embark upon the their second trip to districts to battle. Armed with middle school players which made up a substantial portion of the roster and impact high school upper-clammen, the Lady Spartans are rolling in the right direction.
Upcoming Senior Kendall Sage led Saint Johns Country Day in scoring earning a first team spot on the 2018-2019 Duval Sports All Area Girls Basketball Team averaging 18 points per game and 10 rebounds per game. Sage is currently a little over 100 points away from earning 1000 points going into the 2019-2020 season. Eighth grader Mary Kate Kent brought the action as well, as she was the Lady Spartans second leading scorer last season. Upcoming seniors and twin sisters Leah and Kyla Hartwell served up excellent shooting throughout the season. All together, each Lady Spartan team member successfully contributed exuberant skills leading to a ground breaking season.
Unfortunately, the FAMU Rattlers would holt the Lady Spartans chances of a state championship win due to a 61-25 defeat. Despite the playoff hiccup, Saint Johns Country Day plan to go even further for an even more successful season in 2019.
As the basketball season would come to an end , the ball would not stop for Coach Bronston and the Saint Johns Country Day staff. Bronston along with Brian Ulmer and Marc Allen would lead the transition by rolling out two different training organizations, H2 Hoops (Hungry, Hustle, Hoops) http://www.h2hoops.comand North Florida Basketball http://www.northfloridabasketball.com.
After Bronston, Ulmer and Allen noticed a lack of basic skills on the courts within the middle school and high School levels ,the group embarked upon a common goal to teach players how to play the correct way and to develop the athlete. H2 Hoops program would be established in 2018 by Coach Yolanda Bronston and Brian Ulmer to help players build a strong basketball foundation. H2 Hoops consists of two groups affectionately called The Little Hoopers and The Junior Hoopers. Players were taught to play man to man defense which helped to develop zone defense techniques. Bronston and Ulmer were interested in building a foundation that future coaches could build upon . The Little Hoopers range from ages 4-8 while The Junior Hoopers range from ages 9-13 which could vary at times based on player skill levels.
North Florida Basketball would go on to pick up where H2 Hoops would leave off. Coach Yolanda Bronston would yet again partner up with Marc Allen along with the full support of Saint Johns Country Day to create North Florida Basketball. North Florida Basketball allows the players to participate in games, tournaments and summer camps. North Florida Basketball also provides player access to a shooting machine as well as Vertimax training. Bronston’s better half and assistant Coach Randall Bronston is a certified Vertimax instructor. The Vertimax machine helps to improve speed and agility. North Florida Basketball Goal is not to compete with other organizations but to help better those other athletes as well.
Saint Johns Country Day Girls Basketball, with Yolanda Bronston can be accurately described as sleeping giant. The nurturing and welcoming of all local students athletes, including neighboring counties has attracted and trained many future stars of the game. Their program looks to continue providing a safe and fun enviornment for all athletes in Northeast Florida.
