High School Football Power Rankings Week #1: Columbia Takes Tops, Bartram Bearing Down, Bradford For Real?

It should be no surprise to anyone after week #1 who the best team in Northeast Florida is. But before the regular season games were played, the spring and summer preseason games gave us a glimpse into how things would play out. We all predicted Creekside to beat Ribault, but there were some eye openers after week #1 that left you wondering who the real big dog in the back yard was. It’s safe to say there are no powerhouse teams in Northeast Florida as of yet. But its a long season, and teams have time to establish themselves in more ways than one.

Rankings by Andre’ Ellis

#1. Columbia (1-0)

The Tigers are loaded with play makers on both sides of the ball. It was no surprise that they’d circle the first game on their schedule versus Trinity and having something to prove. Can they maintain momentum versus Oakleaf this week?

#2. Bartram Trail  (1-0)

If there was a shocker this week it was Bartram absolutely putting it on Lee. The Bears have explosive play makers and solid senior leadership at key positions. They take a trip up to Brunswick which has turned into a heated rivalry after a Brunswick player allegedly sent a direct message to the girl friend of one of Bartram’s players. More gasoline to fire for Bartram. Don’t poke the bear.

#3. Sandalwood (1-0)

Sandalwood’s formula for winning will take them a long way if they stick with it. Defense and running the ball with big plays in the passing game. Their hard fought win over rival Terry Parker was a good start to the season but they’ve got to clean up the penalties. And unlike year’s past, I believe this team will get stronger as the year goes on. They have another heated rival today in Fletcher.

#4. Oakleaf (1-0)

The Knights exploded on offense last week showing everyone they can put up points and play defense even without key starters. Instead of proving it against Orange Park they must do so against Columbia this week to provide a good measuring stick for their team.

#5. Trinity Christian (0-1)

It wasn’t the start Trinity wanted but it’s the start that I predicted. Week 1 in the jungle against that Columbia team was a forgone conclusion. However, the Conquerors get a rebound game against Godby this week which will boost their young team’s confidence.

#6. Raines (0-1)

It was a funeral in the graveyard last Friday but it was Raines that was lifeless at home. Their game versus Pahokee was postponed this week, which gives the Vikings plenty of time to iron out the kinks after a big loss to powerhouse Jones at home. They’ll correct them.

#7. Creekside (1-0)

If you’ve followed Duval Sports you’ve seen our coverage of Creekside and the young and talented players they have contributing to the team. Their big play seniors are well versed in the game and they don’t make lots of mistakes. A recipe for success.

#8. Bradford (1-0)

It was a big win for the Tornadoes against Baker County last week. They have an influx of young talent and are senior heavy. That means they’re going to play with confidence and swagger! Can they keep they’re swag against Baldwin this week and prove they are for real?

#9. Fletcher (1-0)

Fletcher is a very young team, but they are well coached and tough. A nice win over Bishop Kenny has them looking for a statement game against Sandalwood today. They’re going to play defense, run the ball and dare you to stop them. The Rivalry is back!

#10. Mandarin (1-0)

The defending champs got a nice win over heated rival Atlantic Coast in week #1, but the Mustangs didn’t look particularly polished. In fact, after their Kickoff classic and first game they look like a heavy weight champion prize fighter leaning against the ropes holding on for dear life. Will Ribault be the one to deal the knockout blow this week?
