Herndon’s Five Touchdowns Lifts Trinity Over Godby in OT

Tallahassee- Trinity Christian’s Kyjuan Herndon rushed for over 250 yards and five touchdowns as Trinity Christian left the big bend with a big win over Godby 45-42. It took overtime to settle the high scoring affair, as Clayton Roeriq hit a 38-yard field goal to seal the win for the Conquerors.

It was a back and forth game as both teams traded scores. Herndon got it started with a 72-yard run to kickoff the scoring in the first quarter. However, Godby responded with a pass from Trey Fisher to Alvin Jones to tie the score at 7-7 .

The second quarter saw Fisher hook up with Jones again on a 52-yard touchdown. The Godby score prompted Trinity to respond and they did rather quickly. In fact, Trinity would score three times in the quarter, beginning with freshman Treyaun Webb who took a kick return 75-yards to the house. Webb was injured on the spectacular play at the goal-line on an apparent horse collar tackle that was not called. The score put Trinity up 14 to 13.

Herndon would add two more scores to his resume on the night, runs from 4-yards and 10-yards out. Trinity took a 28-13 lead over Godby in the first half. However Godby would not go away, as the Cougars scored 21 unanswered points to take a 34-28 lead into halftime.

The second half was Herndon time again, as the Ole Miss commit scored on runs from 4 yards out and an amazing 80 yard scamper to which he left defenders in chase. The score gave Trinity a lead that they would take into the fourth quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Godby would score on a punt return by Alvin Jones to pull them to within one point of the Conquers. Avery Boyd would score on a 2-point conversion to tie the game sending it to overtime. Boyd (Georgia Tech commit) and Jones had great games for Godby, as they kept their team in the contest. Jones scored three times.

Yet in overtime, big time players make big time plays, and the Trinity defense is full of them. They stepped up big as defensive back Fred Davis (Clemson commit) deflected a pass intended for Jones on fourth down, giving the ball to the Conquerors. The play set up the kick as the ball sailed through the uprights to the Conqueror’s elation and celebration.

It was a tough road win for Trinity, after starting off the season with two long trips back to back. Going 1-1 in Lake City and Tallahassee is the confidence booster the team needed to prepare themselves for the long hall. They get Ribault next week. Godby (0-2) takes on Crestview (1-0).
