St. Johns- The clash of two long time rivals resulted in a familiar outcome on Saturday evening. Although both team’s were undefeated, and the often times underdog came in with lots of confidence, it was the favored team that prevailed in the end. Bartram Trail would ran past their rivals Creekside again, in an eyeballing 28-14 victory, as Bartram continues to dominate the series in football.
An undefeated 2-0 Bartram would host an equally undefeated 2-0 Creekside in the weekend battle. Quarterback Chad Dodson would lead the Bears in a match up against the Knights and their quarterback Quinn Sieger. With the win of the coin toss, Creekside opted to defer to the second half. The Bears immediately ripped through the Knights defense as Aaron Jones III scored two touchdowns early in the first quarter. Bartram Trail ruled the first quarter closing out with a boastful 14-0 lead.
The Bear’s Brody Davis made a massive run to obtain a second down in the first quarter. The next play landed a pass in the hands of Eric Weatherly for a third Bartram touchdown. Unfortunately, the play would be nullified due to a penalty. The score remained 14-0 well into the second quarter.
Later, a Creekside opportunity to score on the goal-line would be lost due to a fumble in the back of the end zone for a touch-back. The Bears offense would gain back possession of the ball. Jackson Mayer’s bolting catch produced a Bartram first down. Weatherly teased the crowd with a flash of De’ja’ vu as he ran yet another touchdown. No whistles could be heard and no yellow flags were seen on the field. The play was good and the Bear’s touchdown would be good for a 21-0 score to close out the first half of the game.
The pre-game toss earlier allowed Creekside possession of the ball in the second half. Knight’s quarterback Quinn Sieger would suffer an injury in the third quarter. Backup quarterback Daniel Plummer would take over. After a quick recovery, Sieger would return and launch a rocket over to Shane Calhoun for a much anticipated touchdown which would finally put Creekside on the board with less than 4 minutes left in the quarter. Bartram continued to lead the Knights 21-7 closing out the third quarter.
As Creekside’s defense lined the middle and Luther McCoy broke through the Bears offense, the Bears would find it difficult to score. Surprisingly, Ralph Hamilton would score a Bartram touchdown off of a blocked punt. The Bears led the Knights 28-7 with 8:27 left in the fourth quarter. Jalen Hines successful runs led up to the Knight’s second touchdown.
Creekside’s season began with a great run, but took a turn for the worse when Bartram Trail would pull their coat tails on Saturday. The Knights are now 2-1 and will move forward to face First Coast this week. Bartram Trail remains undefeated at 3-0 and will contend against State Champions Mandarin this week. Will the Mustang or the Bear win the battle?
