New Coach, New Season, New Start For Mayport

The Mayport Middle School Football Team was a power house on the south-side for many years in the early 90’s. The program produced some of the best talent on the beach, filtering them to Fletcher High School. However, since the induction of the middle school playoff system by Duval County in 2013, the Sharks have failed to make the playoffs the last six years. Yet new head coach Richard Seymore hopes that will change, as his team has new blood on the team, that has the sharks smelling blood in the water.

Mayport got their first win of the season against Darnell Cookman 22-2 last week with a strong effort on both sides of the ball. Running back Khalil Blount scored twice for the team, showcasing new speed at the running back position. Not since Myles Montgomery three years ago have the Sharks seen that type of speed.

Wide Receiver Tyler Baxter is another play maker for Mayport that has them thinking big plays this year. He scored a touchdown in the opener versus Cookman as well.

The team got off to a slow start to the game as Darnell Cookman scored a safety off of a bad snap, but that didn’t phase the team. They rallied around one another and got the victory to improve to 1-0 on the season.

Said Coach Seymore ” I’m proud of the work my coaching staff and players put in on a weekly basis”. They’ll attempt to go 2-0 as they renew a rivalry with Landmark today!
