Defending Champs Highlands, Picking Up Where They Left Off

An undefeated 2018 season saw Highlands hoist their first championship in Duval County championship series history. It was a culmination of hard work and dedication by the coaches and the players who combined skill and scheme to win a ring. Well now in 2019, the Highlands Wildcats are picking up where last year’s team left off, after starting the season 2-0.

After defeating Southside in their season opener, Highlands had a hard match-up with the upstart Kirby Smith Comets who came into their game 1-0 after defeating Ft. Caroline in week 1. Yet, even though Kirby Smith presented a tough test, Highlands proved they had all the answers with a 26-0 victory.

Jonathan “Dude” Decosta scored two touchdowns for Highlands as they powered their way through the Comets defense. KIrby Smith couldn’t stop Highland’s running game, as it mixed power , speed and finesse all into one attack.

First the finesse, as Keandre Harold twisted and turned his way for the Wildcats first touchdown of the day. Harold and others would not be denied the endzone on the afternoon.

Next would be the speed, as Jalen Clark rolled through the defense, jump cutting to the end-zone for a touchdown. Finally, the power, as Decosta ran like a bulldozer through the defense. He mixed strength with break away speed in both of his touchdowns on the day.

Highland’s defense yielded zero points on the afternoon, shutting down the Comets. A dominating defensive performance as the defending champs thinking repeat. They’re attempting to be just the second team in the county to repeat as champions. However, Coach Garvin and company will remind his team that its a marathon not a sprint. Highlands has a bye this week, while Kirby Smith(1-1) looks to get back on the winning track with Ribault visiting them today.
