It’s the final week for some teams in the area, and the 2019 High School Football season has come to a close. Some top teams have lost momentum like West Nassau, Columbia, and Oakleaf. Some teams have gained momentum like Terry Parker, Mandarin, and Wolfson. Yes Wolfson, the most surprising team at (6-2), who sits just one game out of a playoff spot in the latest FHSAA rankings. The Wolfpack must win their game and cheer for Raines to defeat Trinity, in hopes of gaining enough points to pass the Conquerors. That’s just one example of many scenarios in play today in this week’s power rankings. There is still a lot to play for, and there is still a lot to be said of teams in our area. There are lots of playoff implications today district titles on the line.
Rankings By : Andre’ Ellis
- Bartram Trail (8-0) – They are district champs after their come from behind victory at Oakleaf last week. This means they are guaranteed a playoff spot. The Bears still have a lot to play for as their playoff seeding and undefeated season lay in the balance against a talented Sandalwood team.
2. Trinity Christian (4-5) – Trinity looks to improve to .500 when they travel to Raines this evening. They’re approaching the game as a playoff game already as they currently sit 6th in the 3A playoffs rankings just above Wolfson. In all actuality, even if they lost this game they’re still going to get in the playoffs. But 5-5 and bragging rights over Lee and Raines looks a lot better than 4-6.
3. Lee (5-3)– Lee wraps up their season today against district opponent Gainesville. If they win, they are district champions and automatically in the playoffs. If they lose, it creates a three way tie between them, Gainesville and Columbia. That’s if Columbia beats Middleburg today. The Tigers have lost 2 straight. Chances are looking good for Lee to return to the playoffs as they currently sit 5th in the playoff rankings.
4. Raines (5-2) – Raines wrapped up the the district as champions last Tuesday with a demolishing of Yulee. They are automatically in the playoffs with the win. However, Coach Wiley wants the city to know that the Vikings are still the team to beat, and what way to do so than to have his team defeat Trinity at the Graveyard. Gonna be a good one.
5. Fleming Island (7-0)- Fleming Island wrapped up their district title last week with a huge win over Buchholz. They are returning to the playoffs after a year’s absence. One of only two undefeated teams in the area, Fleming Island faces Atlantic Coast and then Orange Park to end the season. A great chance for the Golden Eagles to run the table.
6. University Christian (7-1)– The Christians got a big win over Baldwin last week, showcasing their young talent for all to see. They currently sit #1 in their region in the playoff rankings and look to improve to 8-1 against a tough Crescent City team.
7. Ponte Vedra (6-1) The Sharks take on St Augustine today for the district title, the winner is automatically given a bid to the playoffs. It’s a huge game, and both teams know it. Ponte Vedra’s only loss was to Bartram, but they can’t under estimate St. Augustine. After a 61-6 win over Englewood, looks like Ponte Vedra is playing with extreme confidence.
8. Mandarin (5-3)- The Mustangs have rebounded nicely after consecutive wins over Oakleaf and Sandalwood. They fall short of repeating as district champions, but still have a glimmer of hope to make the playoffs. They’re schedule is not hard going forward, so they’ll need some help from outside teams to get in.
9. Westside (7-1) – What can you say about this Wolverine team. They beat rival Ed White for the first time since the mid 2000’s! They have talent and great coaching and can win their district today receiving an automatic bid to the playoffs. Terry Parker stands in their way.
10.. Terry Parker (5-2)– The Braves are on the warpath after winning 5-straight. The knock on them have been the strength of opponent, but they have beaten their schedule and that’s all that truly matters. They can silence the naysayers with a big win over Westside today. Securing a district championship and automatic bid to the playoffs. Parker currently sits #7 in the current playoff rankings , so this is a must win for them.
Best of the Rest: Columbia (6-2), Oakleaf (5-3), Episcopal (8-1), Bolles (6-1), (Wolfson (6-2), Christ’s Church (7-1), Providence (5-1)
