Tears were flowing this Tuesday, when several high school athlete’s dreams of playing college sports became reality, signing their collegiate national letters of intent on wednesday. For many families around the area, this week was filled with happiness as parents and loved ones saw their hard work and fervent prayers pay off for their sons, daughters, nieces and nephews. Yet for one area family, the emotions of the moment were bitter-sweet.
Lee High School’s defensive tackle Calvin Sinclair IV worked hard on the field this year in pursuit of scholarship. His hard work paid off when Tuskegee University paid him a visit in late November. However just a little over a month later on January 8th 2020, Calvin’s mother and father would be involved in a fatal accident taking the life of his father Calvin Sinclair III. Calvin’s mother, Yana Sinclair was seriously injured in the accident spending two weeks in a hospital recovering from her injuries.
Burying his father just two weeks prior, Calvin sat on stage with his mother at his side and delivered a heartfelt message to his mother, and his father. “I want to thank my mom a lot; I know you heard her in the crowd screaming at every game. It’s just a blessing for her to be here and I love her so much. I want to thank my dad, rest in peace to him, I just wish he was here to witness this moment”.
The impassioned speech yielded not a dry eye in the auditorium. It would ended with Sinclair dawning the crimson and gold cap of the Tuskegee University Tigers, where he’ll continue his dream while making his mother and his father proud.
