The Fruit Cove Flyers were a team of destiny and it was fulfilled this year when they defeated Murray 55-44 to win the St. Johns County Middle School Basketball Championship. Murray was vying for a third-straight county championship, but that would be denied at the hands of Fruit Cove.
The Flyers (14-0) ended Murray’s 23-game winning streak in January, and defeated the Bulldogs a second time in the final. They were the only team to match Murray’s quickness with size. Fruit Cove started the season red hot, undefeated in the beating Murray , Gamble
Rogers, and Swiss Point.
They had a high probability of winning it all this year thanks to their
starting five of Chris Arias, BJ Boykin, Alex Collier, Caleb McAbee, and
Jake Schroeder. Led by Coach Friscia & Coach RJ, this dynamic team coupled their size with their skill to take down the two time defending champion.
It was a great run by Murray (12-2) led by eight graders Myles Simmons, Sean Etheridge ,Ja’Ki Singleton and Josh Patton. Seventh graders Jimmy Williams and Karim Preston return in hopes of reclaiming the title.
For now, the championship trophy rests off racetrack road as Fruit Cove won the last St. Johns County Championship of 2020 before the COVID-19 pandemic closed schools.
