Starting quarterback Tre Griner, a three-year starter, was key to the Clay Blue Devils victory over the Orange Park Raiders on Friday night. Griner threw two touchdown passes and ran in another two to lead the Blue Devils to a 47-13 victory .
Coming off a 33-12 victory over University Christian a week ago, the Blue Devils looked unstoppable on offense all night as Tre Griner had his way with the Orange Park defense. After taking the opening kickoff and running the ball on the first three plays, Clay got on the board early in the first quarter when Tre Griner found #3 D’Maurion Frazier for the 67-yard touchdown pass. The Blue Devil defense was stifling, continually stuffing the Raider offense forcing a three and out. However, Orange Park would fake the punt on fourth down and get the first down only to get denied again on offense. After the punt, it would take only one play for Clay to get on the board again as Al’Querious Ray broke down the middle for 74 yards to give Clay a quick 14-0 lead in the first quarter.
On the first play of the second quarter, D’Maurion Frazier would get his second touchdown of the night when he took a 10-yard screen to the end-zone to give Clay at 21-0 lead. Orange Park’s offense would show life on the next drive, getting into Clay’s RedZone, but the drive stalled and a blocked field goal attempt would turn the ball over to a rolling Blue Devil offense. Tre Griner would make slight work of the Raider defense on the next drive, as he took a quarterback keeper 46-yards for another Clay touchdown and a 28-0 lead at the half.
Orange Park would put together some quality drives in the 3rd quarter, but a missed field goal would maintain the shut out for a bit longer for Clay. After the punt, Tre Griner would call his own number on the next play and take it 80 yards to the house. A missed extra point would preserve the running clock. Orange Park would drive down and put up a score to cut the lead to 34-6 as the third quarter expired. That wouldn’t last long as the next drive Tre Griner completed a 67-yard touchdown pass to Jayden Bryan as Clay would take a 41-6 lead with 11:08 minutes remaining in the game. Backups for Clay would finish the game with a late game score as nine seconds remained to finish 47-13.
With the win, Clay improves to 2-0 as they travel to Palatka next Friday. Orange Park falls to 0-2 as they host Raines at home next Friday.
