Jacksonville Fl- Xander Ross scored three times on four receptions, and Treyaun Webb continued his dominance on the ground as the TCA Conquerors defeated the Eagles of North Florida Educational Institute in running-clock fashion Friday night on the home turf.
Ross, a junior, caught four passes for 112 yards, and his three touchdowns came
on catches of 48, 45, and 20 yards, respectively. The first came with 35
seconds left in the first quarter on a bullet pass from quarterback Jacory
Jordan with Ross on a straight route up the left side of the line. Ross
caught the ball at approximately the NFEI 35, stormed past his defender, and
outran the secondary untouched into the endzone.
Jordan and Ross repeated the play with under a minute left in the second quarter on a nearly identical route and got identical results for a 45-yard score. That touchdown – plus Caleb Stevenson’s extra point – made the score 35-0 to put up a running clock throughout the second half.
The duo connected again with 2:00 left in the third. This time, Ross outleaped two defenders and made the catch at the 1 near the left corner. As he came down, he bounced off one defender into the end zone for his third touchdown of the night.
Webb scored two rushing touchdowns on runs of 1 and 19 yards. Webb’s first TD opened the scoring at the 7:59 mark of the first quarter. He scored again with 5:26 left before halftime. Overall, Webb carried 8 times for 93 yards, 2 TD’s and 4 first downs. With last week’s trio of scores vs. Columbia, Webb now has five touchdowns on the season in two games played.
Darnell Rogers also had a big night in limited action. The freshman carried the ball three times for gains of 12, 32, and 36 yards. The first two carries came on the same drive in the second quarter, and he scored from 32 yards out to the front-right pylon with 9:28 left on the clock.
Jordan threw for 164 yards, 3 TD’s and 2 INT’s on an 8-for-18 performance. Stevenson converted all six PAT attempts.
Defensively, Jahron Williams recovered a fumble that Lucius Lattimore forced, and Corey Coley intercepted a pass. The young Conquerors took over defensively in the second half, and Trinity got tackles from freshmen Cameron Anderson, Micha George, Clinton Crump, and sophomore Riley Bennett.
Overall, the Trinity defense had 11 tackles for loss, totaling 43 yards, and held NFEI to -5 yards rushing.
The NFEI Eagles scored on the final play from scrimmage when eighth-grader Troy Edwards intercepted the Trinity backup quarterback’s (8th-grader Colin Hurley) pass at the NFEI 5 and scampered 95 yards untouched down the right sideline for the touchdown. The successful two-point conversion was called back due a penalty, and the second chance did not succeed.
Edwards picked off two passes for 119 total return yards and a touchdown for the Eagles. He also caught three passes for 42 yards and 3 first downs on offense.
