JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Both sides came out energetic and ready to play. But the Landmark Seahawks came out victorious in the end. They defeated the Mayport Sharks, 38-14.
The first quarter was a close one seeing both teams score. Mayport quickly struck first when Marcus Daniels’ turbo speed kicked in 30 seconds into the game. The Sharks were up 8-0.
But with 35 seconds to go in the quarter, Landmark’s Michael Bush ran the ball in for a touchdown. The quarter ended with the Sharks holding a two point lead over the Seahawks.
Mayport scored first in the second quarter. With 3:11 to play in the half, Daniels found Cameron Correll running down the field. He made it to the end zone and to put Mayport up 14-6.
But the second quarter saw the momentum shift in favor of the Seahawks. 14 seconds after Correll’s touchdown, Landmark’s Aaron Lockett ran in for a touchdown to tie the game at 14.
The Seahawks defense carried the team to another touchdown. Off the punt return, Mayport fumbled the ball and Landmark’s Nyzi Richardson picked it up and ran it in for another touchdown. The Seahawks ended the half on top 22-14.
In the third, the Seahawks came out with the same energy they had at the end of the first half. Lockett broke free and won the foot race against Mayport’s defensive line and scored his second touchdown of the night. Then proceeded to convert on the two point conversion to put Landmark up 30-14. This would be the only touchdown scored that quarter.
The final eight minutes of the game showed how locked in Landmark’s defense was. With 4:49 left in the game, Richardson intercepted a high flying Mayport pass just an inch in front of the end zone.
The Seahawks made one final touchdown with 2:21 to play. Rodriguez Coleman got one step on his defender and caught the pass behind him. His defender grabbed onto him but Coleman swung him to the ground and happily skipped in for the touchdown. Final score: 38-14 Landmark.
Both teams will be back in action next Tuesday. Landmark will travel to Fort Caroline Middle School while Mayport will travel to Arlington Middle School. Kick off is set for 5:30pm.
