Jacksonville Fl- Timothy Cole tossed three touchdowns and ran for a fourth for Kirby Smith, leading the Comets to a 24-0 victory over Oceanway in a Duval County Middle School opener.
The Comets jumped out early as Cole found the end-zone on a touchdown run and then a long touchdown pass to his big wide receiver Taeshaun Gelsey. Kirby’s Smith’s offense kept the Oceanway defense on it’s heals all game mixing the run with the pass.
In the second quarter, Cole found his big tight-end Zander Jarvis for a touchdown pass. Jarvis showed great hands, as he held on to the ball and rumbled into the end-zone before the half. Kirby led Oceanway 18-0 at the break.
The second half saw Oceanway come out with more fire and intensity. For head coach Keith Edwards, that’s the main thing he wanted to see from his very young and inexperienced team. ” We have a team of extremely smart players, our cumulative G.P.A on the team is a 3.0 ” He knows the kids can grasp the offense and defense they just need more games under their belt.
A bright spot for Ocean was the play of #3 Quarterback Swanson Ocean, #63 Antonie Demps and #44 Clayton Musser. They showed lots of heart and tenacity on the field making plays here and there. However Kirby Smith had too many weapons and too much experience for them.
Eighth grader Adrian Brown Jr caught a pass and weaved his way for 75-yards down to the Oceanway 5-yard line in the second half. that play set up a touchdown pass from Cole to Christopher Foy who skipped into the end-zone.
It would be the final score on the evening as Kirby defeated Oceanway 24-0 to start the season off with a bang. Kirby Smith has won basketball championship in recent years, but has a great shot of competing for a football championship this year.
They have several playmakers to make a serious run, led by a very talented and mature 7th grader who showed poise and playmaking ability in his 2020 debut.
