Big Fourth Quarter Helps Lift Dupont Over Southside

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A long first half for both, the Dupont Dragons and the Southside Knights. Neither team could find their game until the final quarter which had the Dragons come out on top 18-14.

Both teams had plenty of opportunities to score the football but neither team could find their rhythm offensively. That is until the last minute of the third.

Dupont’s Xavier McCoy sped around the Knights defense dodging tackles. He finally was hit but the tackle came too late. McCoy had scored the first touchdown of the game to end the third quarter with the Dragons up 6-0.

McCoy wasn’t done quite yet. 30 seconds into the fourth quarter, McCoy scored another touchdown to put Dupont up 12-0. All of the momentum that was swinging in the Dragons favor quickly moved over to the Knights side.

With five minutes to play in the game, Tamajh Mitchell found the open gap in the Dragons defense and ran in for the touchdown. This cut the Knights deficit to just one touchdown (12-6).

But the Knights could not celebrate for long. The Dragons’ Brody Jennings found the sideline and followed it all the way to the end zone. This touchdown increased the Knights deficit back to two touchdowns (18-6).

With one minute to play in the game, Mitchell zoomed in for another Knights touchdown. Southside converted on the two point conversion to bring the score 18-14.

The Dragons chose the strategy of holding the ball for the final 18 seconds of the game. The ball in McCoy’s hands, the Knights defense running at him, and he runs into the end zone. But the refs called off the potential safety point due to time running out before he entered the end zone.
