JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Fletcher Senators (6-1) came ready to play on both sides of the ball. In the final regular season game, the Senators defeated the Mandarin Mustangs (3-5) at home, 28-13. Myles Montgomery, senior Running Back, scored three touchdowns in the Senators win.
Halfway through the first quarter, the Senators found the end zone first. Aaron Hester, junior Running Back, barreled in for the touchdown to put the Senators up 7-0.
Less than two minutes later, Montgomery saw another open spot in the Mustangs defense and ran in for another Senators touchdown to help put the team up 14-0.
One minute later, the Mustangs scored a touchdown. Senior Quarterback Tre Lawrence, found senior Wide Receiver, Devon Lewis dashing down the left sideline. Lawrence floated the pass overtop the Senator defender and landed it perfectly in Lewis’ hands and he ran in for the easy six points.
The Mustangs got the extra point to go to bring the Mustangs within one touchdown of the Senators, 14-7.
But Montgomery wiggled his way through the Mustangs defense once again and scored his second touchdown of the game to extend the Senators lead 21-7 before the end of the first quarter.
With nine and a half minutes left in the second quarter, senior Safety Nic Mitchell blocked a Senators punt and scored a touchdown to bring the score to 21-13. This would be the last points the Mustangs would score in the game.
Although the Senators were held scoreless in the second quarter, their defensive line came up big. Junior Defensive Back Merritt Reynolds, intercepted a Mustangs pass with 6:03 remaining before halftime.
Both teams defenses worked hard in the third quarter. Neither team could find the end zone. But when the fourth quarter rolled around the Senators were able to find it one more time.
Early in the fourth, Montgomery ran in for his third and final touchdown of the game. This put the Senators up 28-13.
The Fletcher Senators will now prepare for next Friday’s playoff game against the Atlantic Coast Stingrays (3-5). The Mandarin Mustangs will prep for the Sandalwood Saints (6-2). Kick off for both games are set for 7:30pm.
