The Forestview Outlaws are National Champions after a 19-0 defeat of the Sarasota Sun Devils Wednesday. Forestview won the Mid-America-Southeast championship, played in Winter Garden Florida. Before the game, Alabama starting quarterback Mac Jones sent well wishes to the team.
Forestview got on the board first with a #7 Terrell Belton Jr touchdown pass. #15 Kevin Jenkins would take it to the house! The outlaws also got scores from #8 Warren Covington and #3 Romeo Rolack.
The defense also made plays in the championship shutout and all year. #9 Shurronn Sibley made big tackles all game, and #5 Howard McMillan was the leader of the defense at middle linebacker. Players like #1 Tre’veon Gelsey, #2 Deante Hampton Jr, #3 Romeo Rolack, #4 Deverrex Smith, #6 Kyren Haines, and #8 Da’zon Middleton led the Outlaws to their undefeated season.
The Outlaws finished at 12-0 this season, with big wins in the mitey mite division in the city. Their most memorable win came against North Florida. Said Head Coach Deante Hampton, “we faced some adversity with a lot of mistakes, had 5 turnovers and was losing 12-6” But Forestview showed championship resolve in that game, making a goal-line stand on the 2-yard line and putting together a 97-yard drive to win the game 13-12.
Hampton has coached youth football for 12 years and has been at Forestview all his life. It’s family to him in more ways than one as his son is also on this championship team. When asked how does it feel to coach his own son Hampton said, ” it’s an amazing feeling and I’m so busy coaching, that I don’t get to see what he really do in the game, until we’re home watching our game film” .
In the playoffs, Forestview defeated Sarasota 39-8 in the regional championship. Then the Ouitlaws defeated the LaPorte Slicers ( Indiana) 36-0, to face the Sun Devils again in the championship.
The traditional Pop Warner Super Bowl which is held at Disney’s Wild World of Sports was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Normally eight regions, from different states compete, however only two regions competed this year.
Forestview last made it to the Super Bowl in 2015, coming away with the runner-up trophy. That team featured players such as Chris Calhoun (Sandalwood High School Quarterback), Freddie Manning ( Ribault High School Wide Receiver), and Nicholas Bell ( Paxon High School Defensive Back). The future stars of the area were on display in the big game, and Forestview can boast that the best players will come from their championship park. The 2020 Mighty Mite National Champions.
