Ft Myers FL- Coach Robin Mignerey led the Ponte Vedra Sharks to back to back state titles in 2020. Their third state championship in school history. With a record of 27-0, Ponte Vedra completed a season like no other devouring opponents left and right on their way to the championship. In the process, Mignerey became the first Northeast Florida coach to win the annual Florida Dairy Farmers award for volleyball.
In the playoffs, Ponte Vedra defeated Ridgeview, Wakulla, and a 2019 title rematch with Vanguard saw the Sharks get revenge. In the title game, they beat Jensen Beach 25-17, 25-21, 25-16 on their way to their 36th consecutive victory. Amy Burkhardt had 14 kills, Rachel Johnson had 8 kills, Lily Zeras had 18 digs, and Jessica Shattles had 29 assists in the game. Four different players recorded blocks for the Sharks.
Jensen Beach’s Naiya Sawtelle had 15 kills, Raegan Richardson had 18 assists in the loss. Their record coming into the game was 20-1 as they dominated teams in their way to the championship. But in Ft Myers, the Falcons ran into a team like none other in Ponte Vedra.
Players like Chelsea Sutton, and Kendall Mignerey contributed mightily all season along with Johnson, Shattles, and Burkhardt. For her outstanding play, Burkhardt was named the Miss Volleyball Player Of The Year.
Incredibly, only one team (Creekside) managed to win sets against Ponte
Vedra. The sharks outscored opponents 72-2 this season, including wins over Bartram, Creekside and Mandarin. It’s their total team effort that set the tone for excellence in 2020, and the reason the Ponte Vedra Sharks repeated as volleyball champions.
