2020 Year In Review: Bishop Kenny Upsets Cardinal Gibbons Winning Volleyball State Championship!

Fort Myers FL- Bishop Kenny won their third championship in school history defeating Cardinal Gibbons 29-27, 25-18, 17-25, 25-20 in the Class 4A title game this year.

Allison Cavanaugh had 19 kills for Kenny, while Bailey Chin chipped in with 11 kills. Alexis Chin had 37 assists. Tina Nika had 5 aces and 23 digs. Ashton Dilts had 6 blocks in the contest.

Dylan Andrews had 10 kills and 3 aces in the game for Cardinal Gibbons. Freshman Emma O’Keefe had 5 blocks in the title match for the 7-4 chiefs. Cardinal Gibbons didn’t begin their season until October 2nd due to Covid-19 restrictions by south Florida. Both teams did a great job of navigating a season of uncertainty to championship’s end.

The Crusaders finished the season with a record of 21-8 led by coach Suzanne Winkler. She guided her team on a 7-game winning streak, seemingly getting better with every game. In the playoffs they defeated Bolles, Raines, Baker County, Yulee, Santa Fe, and the Academy of the Holy Names. By the time they reached the championship versus a the 20-time state champion Cardinal Gibbons, the team was playing with extreme confidence.

This confidence was served up by players like senior Emma Fraidenburg, senior Laura Roskein and sophomore Allison Cavanaugh who was named the Class 4A Miss Volleyball Player of the Year. Congratulations to Bishop Kenny, 2020 Volleyball State Champs!
