It’s been an amazing year for two local athletes in Northeast Florida as they were presented with top honors for boys and girls basketball for the 2020-2021 season. One etched his name amongst those such as Paxon’s Isaiah Adams (2020), Nease’s Camille Hobby (2019), Ribault’s Rennia Davis (2017), Bartram Trail’s Steffi Sorenson (2006), Ribault’s Dorian Williams (2002), and Jackson’s James Collins (1992) as former Mr. and Ms. Basketball winners.
Bishop Kenny’s Jasmyn Roberts was named the Florida Dairy Farmers Class 4A Girls Basketball Player of the Year. She finished her career with 2,224 career points, placing her tied for 8th in Northeast Florida’s girls all time scoring list. She finished with 1,005 rebounds and 323 assists at Bishop Kenny.
Roberts was a true force to be reckoned with her senior year. After leading her team two back to back Final 4 appearances, Roberts battled early season injuries to lead her team back to the Final 4 in 2021 for a third consecutive time. She averaged 21.6 points per game, 9.0 rebounds and 3.6 steals this season. She takes her talents to south beach, as she is committed to the University of Miami to play college basketball.
Another top honor was bestowed to West Nassau’s point forward phenom Dallan ” Deebo” Coleman. Coleman was named the Florida Dairy Farmers Class 4A Boys Basketball Player of the Year. He was also crowned Florida Dairy Farmers Mr. Basketball for 2020-20201, the highest individual prep basketball honor in the state of Florida.
Coleman averaged 24.7 points per game, 9.0 rebounds and 2.2 steals this season. He saved the best for his senior season, leading West Nassau to 14 straight wins and its first ever Boys Basketball Final 4 appearance. He scored a game high 33 points in the state semifinal game. Deebo finished his career with 2,539 points, 745 rebounds, and 347 assists. The ultra talented Coleman will be playing collegiate basketball at Georgia Tech as he is committed to the Yellow Jackets.
Other high area finishers included Oakleaf’s Taliah Scott who finished second in Class 7A. Columbia’s Na’Haviya Paxton who finished third in Class 6A. For coaches, Oakleaf’s Fred Cole finished second in Class 7A, and St. Augustine’s Eric Hancock finished third in Class 5A.
