Bartram Trail welcomed former state champion Columbus to St. Johns county Friday night in a battle of two 1-0 teams. Bartram defeated Rickards last week 24-7, while Columbus defeated Benedictine 42-27.
A player we highlighted earlier this week set the tone for the game when Bryce Johnson grabbed an interception for Bartram setting up their offense in good field position. Bartram was able to convert on a 36-yard field goal and take an early lead 3-0 in the game.
Bartram would take a 3-0 lead into the second quarter as the defense led by Micah Pollard, Segree Graham, and Sharif Denson shut down the Explorers. The defense kept the shutout all the way to halftime.
The Bartram offense however would add to their score before the half when Tight End Eli Sutherland scored a touchdown on a reception from quarterback Riley Trujillo to send the Bears to halftime leading 10-0 over Columbus.
In the second half, more from the Bartram defense was showcased when linebacker Dylan Chiedo recovered a fumble and the defense scored a safety in the 3rd quarter.
Columbus would add two field goals, but it wasn’t’ nearly enough as Bartram and it’s determined defense won the game 12-6. Bartram improves to 2-0 on the season while Columbus falls to 1-1. Bartram faces Lincoln (0-1) at home next week.
