Green Cove Springs FL- After defeating Fleming Island in week 1, and Ridgeview 34-0 last week, the Clay Blue Devils looked to continue their winning ways against Clay county foes this season. However, Oakleaf “stubbed” that notion, when freshman defensive back Hylton “Drake” Stubbs intercepted a pass and returned it 30-yards for a back breaking touchdown in the second quarter. In the fourth quarter, Oakleaf’s Harold “Dylan” Stubbs, the older brother of Drake, knifed in for a sack on 4th down to seal the win as Oakleaf got the 33-27 victory over county rival Clay.
Oakleaf struck first when running back Isiah Shevchook took the handoff off right guard to score on a 3-yard touchdown run to give them a 7-0 lead. However, Clay would respond to close the gap.
Clay’s Billy Mobley tossed two touchdowns to Brandon Peavy for scores as the Blue Devils clawed their way back into the game. It was a raucous crowd at Clay, and it fueled the fire for the team in the 2nd quarter. Clay would score 21 unanswered points to take a 21-20 lead going into halftime.
In the second half, both teams would trade scores. First quarterback Drew Ammon would hook up with Shevchook on a 24-yard touchdown pass to take a 27-20 lead.
The Billy Mobley to Brandon Peavy connection would continue for Clay in the third quarter, as they hooked up for another touchdown in the second half. The fourth quarter touchdown by Clay shifted momentum back to the home team and their crowd, yet Oakleaf would silence them.
With 2:39 to play in the game, Quarterback Drew Ammon would drop back and connect with Isaiah Shevchook who ran it in for the score to give Oakleaf a 33-27 lead. The Knights defense would step up forcing fourth down as Stubb’s sack ended the game.
Oakleaf (3-2) is home for Sandalwood (2-3) next week for a district battle, while Clay (2-2) is home for a district battle with Palatka (1-2).
