Trinity Triumphant Over Champagnat In 2A Clash Of Champions

Tallahassee Fl- It was the battle of Freshman quarterbacks. Trinity Christian’s Colin Hurley versus Champagnat Catholic’s Ennio Yapoor. The Freshman Phenoms took over the Trinity and Champagnat’s offenses with a lot of pressure on their backs. But both have shown this season, that they were made for the moment. Hurley has passed for 20043 yards, 23TDs, and 11 this interceptions year, while Yapoor has tossed 23 touchdowns, on 2636 yards passing and just 2 interceptions. Hurley and Yapoor both have already captured power 5 D1 offers. The only thing left was to decide who would triumph for the championship trophy.

Trinity Christian (9-4) came into the game defending Class 3A state champions, defeating Chaminade-Madonna 25-22 in 2020. Champagnat Catholic (11-2) was fresh off a state title win over University Christian 41-27 in 2020. Trinity was attempting to win their 9th title in school history, while Champagnat was vying for their third title in a row, and 5th in school history.

The game began quick for Champagnat as wide receiver Kelvin Blount caught a pass in stride and roll down the middle of the field for a touchdown. The pass from freshman Ennio Yapoor gave the Lions a 7-0 lead on their first drive of the game.

However that lead wouldn’t’ last long. On the ensuing drive Trinity put the ball in the hands of their standout running-back Treyaun Webb. The talented junior who recently decommitted from Oklahoma, took the hand off right up the middle and rumbled for 43-yards and a score to tie the game 7-7 with just over 8 minutes to play in the first quarter.

Webb came in to the game on an absolute tear rushing for rushing for 177 and 2 TDs in the state semifinals versus Orlando Christian Prep. He preceded that performance with a 291 yard 3 touchdown effort in the state regional final versus Munroe. He went over 100-yrds in the first half of the state championship game.

Next ColinHurley
⁩ would get into the act. He hit Seth Bialek on a slant in the endzone to put Trinity up 14-7 in the first. Hurley also hit Fred Highsmith on big first downs in the first half, including a 52 yard pass play in the second quarter. He helped guide his team to a 14-7 halftime lead.

The second half saw Trinity pull away thanks to it’s dominant run game and defense. Webb added his second touchdown of the game right after halftime. Then, in came running-back Darnell Rogers who has shown his ability to carry the load this year and he was relied upon in the second half to do the same and he did. The Sophomore scored his first touchdown to give Trinity a 27-7 lead. He would then add a second from 1-yard out to give the Conquerors a 34-15 lead. Finally, he completed the hat trick with his third score of the game, a 46-yard scamper to go up 41-23 and close the game out.

Trinity’s defense was a prime reason for their success this year, and once again they stepped up big in the championship game. Linebacker Caden Morrell came into the game leading the Conquerors with 139 tackles on the season. In the first quarter he scooped up a fumble forced by teammate Cameron Anderson and ran 25 yards for a supposed touchdown, however the referees called the quarterback down by contact.

Nevertheless, Morell and the Trinity defense would continue to make plays. He would register a sack, Johnathan Goddard added pressures and to seal the win, Jaykob Jones would grab an interception as Trinity won its second straight championship 41-23.

This was a special win for head Coach Verlon Dorminey in a very special year. After winning hos 300th career game earlier in the season, the winningest active coach in Northeast Florida suffered a fall and subsequent back injury during the playoffs. The team rallied around him and adopted the phrase ” Win for V-Man”. That they did.
