The Generals are one of the only teams in the area that can boast wins over teams like Fletcher, Impact Christian, Bishop Snyder, Ponte Vedra, Sandalwood, West Nassau, #5 Fleming Island, and #4 Jackson. Well now, they can add a district championship to that list as they defeated Raines Friday night 57-46 to win the title.
All year Riverside has been led by Dominick Scott (13.2 ppg), Tahj McClain (7.9 RPG, 2.5 BPG), and Montez Dunson (10.9 ppg). Yet the Generals are much more of a team than just individual players. On Friday, players like Antonio Harrison, Zion Pittman, and Tae’shaun Gelsey came through with big plays on both sides of the ball to help take home the championship.
Although they fell short in the Gateway Conference championship, Raines certainly has nothing to hold their heads down for. A District runner up trophy is certainly a big accomplishment for Head Coach Tony Bannister and company. They have undergone a rebuild in recent years, and Tuesday’s upset win over Ribault, and a potential playoff berth went a long way in accomplishing the feat. Once again led by Trevon Nevarez, and Na’Vonte Ivy Raines finishes with a 14-12 before the post season.
Coach David Jones and his Riverside Generals finished up 22-4 on the season. They can be confident entering the playoffs that they still have their best basketball left to play. They are still playing with motivation and motivation for their fallen teammate Michael Walton, who fatally passed away from a hit and run car accident in September. They defeated Ed White 60-53 to advance to the finals after a first round bye in districts. As the number one seed, they will have a target on their backs, but they are built tough to handle the challenge.
