Deland Fl- The St. John Country Day Girls Soccer team had not lost in the FHSAA state playoffs since 2011. Their streak of 10 straight titles extended to 11 as senior Julia Boaventura kicked two second half goals to help St. John’s Country Day (19-3-1) defeat Shorecrest Prep (15-4) 2-0 Wednesday night. Amazingly, Boaventura and her fellow seniors like Hannah Lemieux ( 8 goals, 6 assists) were still in first grade the last time the Spartans fell in the playoffs. It’s constantly “deja vu” for the team as they relive championship glory with each passing year and with each prominent player.

One of their leading scorers this year was junior Lauryn Mateo, who scored 14 goals. She’ll be back along with freshman Sophia Pontieri who tied eighth grader Sydney Schmidt for second on the team with 8 assists to compliment Pontieri’s 8 goals on the season. Freshman Mia Johnson scored 5 goals on the season as well. It’s one of the key reasons the Spartans were able to navigate a difficult schedule and still win 19 games.
There was freshman Cece Nowicki who kicked 2 goals in an 8-0 win over St. Francis in the regional quarterfinal. St. John’s Country Day defeated Westminster Academy 8-0 in the state semifinal. Before that, they downed Christ’s Church 8-0 to win the Class 2A Region 1 Championship. A very special moment for Coach Pickett who won his 500th career game in his illustrious career.
They’ve named the field after him at St. John’s Country Day School, and he’s still coaching. A true testament to his remarkable success and the program’s dominance as a dynasty.
