Fletcher Makes History Winning State Title Over Lourdes Academy

Deland Fl- Congratulations to the Fletcher High School Girls Soccer team, on winning their first ever state championship defeating Lourdes ( Miami) 1-0 Friday. Yet that wasn’t the only historic feat for the team. With their win, Fletcher became the only Duval County public school in history to win a soccer championship.

Fletcher seniors Angelina Madera (14) and Josey Rossignol (18) celebrate Rossignol’s go-ahead goal in the 68th minute of a FHSAA Class 6A semifinal at Jack Taylor Stadium. Madera sealed the Senators’ 3-1 win over Viera with a goal three minutes later. (Featured Image by Will Brown, Official Florida FC).

Fletcher (18-5-2) defeated powerhouse Viera 3-1 to advance to the title game and found themselves in a scoreless first half against top ranked Lourdes Academy Bobcats (17-2-3). Defense by Mia Diaz, Evie Poland and Avery Langlois kept the field clear. This set up a second half that saw Angelina Madera score the only points of the day, a long kick sailing past the Bobcat goalie. That’s all the points the Senators would need as they took home the victory 1-0.

It’s sure to be a big celebration for the team, especially if the send off was any indication. The soccer team received a grand send off which motivated them to bring the trophy back home. Congratulations to Coach Bradley Plummer and the State Champion Fletcher Senators.
