Jacksonville FL- In the popular card game spades, winning by ten books is referred to as ” running a dime”. Well, after the defending Class 2A state champion Trinity Christian Conquerors won their ninth FHSAA State title in 2021, they look to “run a dime” in 2022 by winning a tenth title. The Conqueors defeated Champagnat Catholic (Hialeah) 41-23 in 2021. With two consecutive State championships, they look to make it three in a row for the first time since winning four Class 3A titles from 2013 to 2016.
2021 Record : 6-4
Key Losses: Fred Highsmith (WR), Shuan Davis (OT), Michael Trimble (OT), Caden Morrell (LB), Johnathan Goddard( DT), Deon Briggs (DT), Keaton Thomas (S), Cam Miller (CB), LB Tito Butler, Daraias James (WR), Xander Ross (WR).
Coach Verlon Dorminey won his career 300th game in 2021, he is the winningest active coach in Northeast Florida with 306 wins. He is the second winningest coach in the area behind the late great Corky Rogers of Bolles. With 9 state championships to his credit, Dorminey can tie Rogers this year for the most State championships by a coach in Florida. In order to accomplish this, he’ll have to tread into unchartered territory as the FHSAA unveils it’s new Metro and Rural Classifications for the first time. There are four classes, and Trinity is in Class 1M (Metro), Region 1, District 1.
District 1 Opponents:
- Christ’s Church Academy
- North Florida Educational Institute (NFEI)
- Providence
- University Christian
Offense
Returning offensive starters this year for Trinity include senior running back Treyaun Webb, who rushed for 1,192 yards and 11 touchdowns in just 10 games. The 4-star Florida commit is the #1 ranked running-back in Northeast Florida by Duval Sports.
Joining Webb in the backfield is junior running back Darnell Rogers, who is one of the most explosive ball carriers in the area. Rogers (1,299 yards, 13 TD’s) combined with Webb to rush for 2,491 yards and 24 touchdowns on the season. Look for that number to increase in 2022 as they are the most talented runningback tandum in the state of Florida.
At quarterback, sophomore Colin Hurley set the area on fire last year. He passed for 2,146 yards and 24 touchdowns his freshman year. Hurley is rated a 4-star recruit by national recruiting site On3 Sports. He is rated a 5-star recruit by Duval Sports as one of the nation’s top-rated 2025 quarterbacks.
At wide receiver, junior Miles Burris returns to Trinity after playing his sophimore year at Ridgeview High School. Burris scored 5 touchdowns and caught 41 balls for 550 yards last year. Burris will most likely lead a group that welcomes two sport athlete Kyle Bolston (Sandalwood) and break-out year candidate Tyrone Summerall (Mandarin). Bolston caught 4 touchdowns on 226 yards receiving last year, and will most certainly enhance a brand new Trinity receving core.
Returners include Senior kicker Seth Bialek who caught two touchdowns for Trinity last year, and Junior London Smith who moves into the slot position and will also catch passes from Hurley.
Senior Christian Markum returns at center and will lead an offensive line with Tyler Cline, Judd Terry and Malachi Young who came over last year from Ed White.
Defense
On defense, 2024 linebacker Cam Anderson was among Florida’s leading tacklers with 106, including 16.5 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks. He made the Duval Sports 2021-2022 Prime Time Player list. Joining Anderson at linebacker is newcomer, junior Bryce Kazmierczak who comes over from Baker County. He helped lead them to the Class 5A State semifinal and the #1 defense in Northeast Florida registering 98 tackles and 12 sacks.

In the secondary defensive back Jaykob Jones (2024) is a big hitter who gets his hands on the football. Don’t be surprised if you see him on offense at wide receiver. Another two-way player for Trinity is defensive back Tyler Jackson who has great hands and will play wide receiver as well. Rounding out the secondary is defensive back Trevyn Smith. Smith combines experience and athleticisim to make for a complete defensive back in one of the historically premier defensive backfields in the country. This unit won’t posses the household names from the past, but are eager to make names for themselves in 2022.

Outlook: Trinity, like many teams in Northeast Florida lost several seniors to a loaded 2022 graduating class. They may struggle in the trenches especially on the defensive lines. However, with their premier backfield returning and Florida Gator great Guss Scott back at offensive coordinator, look for the Conquerors to run the football and dominate at least three of the four Class 1M opponents on their schedule.
2022 Prediction: 8-2
