With the 162nd pick in the 5th round of the 2023 NFL draft, the Indianapolis Colts selected Tight End Will Mallory out of the University of Miami. Mallory was a 4-star tight end out of Providence High School graduating in 2018.
Mallory was the most coveted Tight End to come out of the area in the last decade. He caught 46 passes for 900 yards with 12 touchdowns in 2016 during his junior season. Finished 2017 (senior year) with 21 catches for 364 yards and 3 touchdowns after battling injuries. Not just football, Mallory excelled in track & field as well. He was a 7x finalist in the 100m, 110m hurdles and 300m hurdles, and a district champion in the high jump.
The big man from the beach topped ESPN’s Junior 300 list at #103, the top prospects in the country. They had him listed as a 200 pound tight end but he was more like a 210 pound wide receiver. A mis-match nightmare in high school as a pass catcher with a big frame, he used it well as a blocker also.
At Miami, he caught 42 passes for 538 yards and 3 touchdowns, leading the Canes in recieving yards and second in touchdowns in 2022. He started all 12 games his junior year (covid year) and caught 30 passes for 347 yards with 4 touchdowns in 2021. Before that, Mallory in 2020 caught 22 passes for 329 yards with 4 touchdowns.
As a sophomore in 2019, he saw action in all 13 games with eight starts catching 16 passes for 293 yards with 2 touchdowns. His freshman year (2018), he saw action in 10 games and made one start during the regular season, catching 5 passes for 37 yards with 1 touchdown.
Everything Mallory put on the field in high school at Providence, he immediately showed as a true freshman at Miami. Now, the Indinapolis Colts will expect the same from their new rookie draft pick, and my money is on Mallory to give them a big and immediate return on their investment.
