Green Cove Springs-The Clay Blue Devils jumped out to a 13-3 halftime lead over county rival Fleming Island Friday night. Senior Javaris Roberts barreled into the end-zone for a score as Clay built a first half lead. Clay used multiple quarterbacks in the game including Landon Chadwick, and Landon Martin. However, after halftime Fleming Island would make a furious comeback, thanks to an impressive game by junior Sebastion Cruz. He scored on a run around the left side to close the score gap 13-10 in the second half. Cruz would add two more touchdowns on the ground in the second half, lifting his team to victory.

It was also a good effort by Akron commit Cibastian Broughton, who also scored in the contest. The Duval Sports 20204 First Team quarterback is poised to have a great season, and can take his leadership to another level by guiding his team on and off the field. Fleming Island’s defense also came up big in the second half, holding Clay to just one score.

That score would come from senior Antonio Thomas of Clay, who tossed a touchdown to wide receiver Daylen Brown. It would be Brown’s second score of the game. When the dust cleared, Fleming Island was victorious 30-13. The Golden Eagles travel on the road again, this time to Riverside (0-1) who fell to Oakleaf(1-0) in week 1. They’re hoping that their comeback in Clay will generate confidence all season.

Clay (0-1 )on the other hand, faces a winless Yulee (0-1) team this week. That game will be extremely competitive as both teams will want to prevent starting the season 0-2. It’s a perfect opportunity for the Blue Devils to comeback in their own right. Attempting to correct mistakes from a game they had controlled for two and a half quarters. Both teams showcased top talent, and with discipline and determination, both Fleming Island and Clay, can use the comeback to go forward.
