Jackets And Generals Explode In 82 Point Shoot-Out, As St. Augustine Rockets Past Riverside

St. Augustine- It was a good old fashioned shoot-out between two of the oldest ad most historic high schools in Florida. The Riverside Generals and St. Augustine Yellow Jackets traded blows for four quarters, combining for furious 55 first half points.

The frenzied pace saw scores from St. Augustine’s Trendell Anderson, who found a hole and darted through it for a 10-yard touchdown in the first quarter. Anderson would score twice on the ground in the contest. Riverside’s Shermon Davis would plunge in from 3-yards out to cap an 80-yard,16 play drive to notch the score at 7-7 a piece in the first quarter.

Riverside would respond, as Zavier Hilliard caught an 8-yard touchdown pass to halve the deficit 21-14 in the second. It wouldn’t take long for more points to be scored. Wide receiver Carl Jenkins shook a defender who was in man coverage. He went the distance for a 50-yard touchdown to increase St. Augustine’s lead to 28-14.

The first half deluge of scoring kept coming when a 14-play, 91-yard drive was punctuated by Glenn Foreman III’s 2-yard touchdown run to keep Riverside close for a single drive. That’s because Dexter Baker, would score one of the Yellow Jackets’ three rushing touchdowns. St. Augustine scored five touchdowns on its first five drives to score 34-points in the first half.

An opening drive of 60-yards on 13 plays was capped by a Shermon Davis touchdown. General Shermon scored two touchdowns on the ground against St. Augustine, fresh off a 167-yard 2 touchdown performance against Orange Park last week. The score cut the lead to 34-28.

Surprisingly, St. Augustine was not affected by their impromptu off week last week. As their game against Bolles was canceled due to bad weather and field conditions. It wasn’t the best field conditions this Friday against Riverside, but St. Augustine turned the contest into a track meet.

A Nate Preston 1-yard touchdown run, and a Locklan Hewlett to Trenton Jones 39-yard touchdown saw that St. Augustine would keep their distance from Riverside and get the 47-35 victory Friday night.

It was predicted that the contest would be high scoring and it was. The game featured Riverside’s Tae’Shaun Gelsey (4-star Florida commit), Carl Jenkins Jr (3-star UCF commit) of St. Augustine along with his quarterback, Locklan Hewlett (3-star USF commit),and teammate Somourian Wingo (4-star WR).
