St. Augustine Quiets Critics After Dominating Performance Over Rival Bartram Trail

St. Johns Fl- After an overtime loss to Nease back in September, lots of criticisms surrounded St. Augustine, and their ability to finish games after starting fast. Afterall, the Jackets were outscored in the second half by both Riverside and Nease in back to back games. Yet, since the loss St. Augustine has not only finished games, but blown out opponents in the process. Friday, was their toughest opponent in rival Bartram Trail and they quieted a lot of critics with their performance.

The game started off with a motivated Bartram Trail marching down the field and scoring a touchdown. Running back Arthur Lewis scored the short rushing touchdown, as Bartram attacked what seemed to be the weakness of St. Augustine’s defense. Bartram would lead 7-0.

Yet, St. Augustine would respond with their high powered offense when Jayquan Lee dove into the endzone for a touchdown. The score would tie the game at 7-7 early in the first quarter. Next, St. Augustine would increase their lead when quarterback Locklan Hewlett found 3-star wide receiver Carl Jenkins Jr for a 13-0 score.

A fumble by Bartram gave the ball back to St. Augustine, and it was another score by the Jackets. This time it was Trendell Anderson who rolled to the goal line for a score. A 2-point conversion saw them increase their lead to 21-7 over Bartram.

The deluge of points would continue. Arthur Lewis would rush for another touchdown in the game, to pull Bartram closer and stop the unanswered scoring from St. Augustine. It was a much needed score for the team, who was looking to get a big signature win to turn around their season.

Unfortunately for Bartram there was now way to stop St. Augustine. The Jackets offense just kept stinging the Bears in the second half. After a Locklan Hewlett touchdown pass to Somourian Wingo closed out the first half, St. Augustine would score 21 more points.

Scores from Trendell Anderson, and two scores from Durell Preston Jr quieted the crowd and the critics tat said St. Augustine couldn’t finish. Friday night they did in emphatic fashion with a ground and pound run game.

A late score by Arthur Lewis IV gave him 109 yards and 3 touchdowns in the game. Lewis has 1,226 yards rushing and 14 touchdowns. He is now third in the state in rushing yards, and tied for first in rushing touchdowns.

But it was St. Augustine who won the game going away 48-21. Locklan Hewlett has passed for 1,493 yards and 16 TDs. Trendell Anderson has rushed for 623 yards and 13 touchdowns. While three receivers all have at least 400 yards receiving Somourian Wingo (479 yards, 6 TDs), Carl Jenkins Jr (478yds, 7 TDs), and Trenton Jones (455yds, 3 TDs).

St. Augustine improved to 6-1 on the season. They have a tune up against Ridgeview for the district title, before a showdown against Mandarin. They are playing with extreme confidence and proved they can finish against a very good team. Bartram Trail fell to 3-4 and have a big test against Buchholz for a big district battle. It’s virtually a must win game for them, to have a strong shot at the playoffs.
