The Lemon Heads Return; Ed White Wins District Over Riverside In Final Second Shocker

Jacksonville Fl- The Ed White Commanders hosted the Riverside Generals on Senior Night in a thrilling matchup to determine the 4A District champions. From the first snap, both teams displayed intensity and heart, but it was the Commanders who emerged victorious, clinching a dramatic 21-20 win.

The Generals wasted no time getting on the scoreboard. Riverside’s Shermon Davis charged into the end zone on an early run, giving the Generals an initial 6-0 lead. But Ed White’s defense answered in spectacular fashion. Davonte Mango intercepted a Riverside pass, racing into the end zone for a pick-six, which shifted the momentum and gave the Commanders a 7-6 lead.

As the intensity continued to build, Riverside’s Tae’Shaun Gelsey made a standout play. Quarterback Glenn Foreman launched a deep pass that Gelsey skillfully reeled in, pushing the Generals back on top with a score of 12-7. The Commanders, however, were determined to respond, and Nick Roberson delivered. Roberson powered his way into the end zone, allowing Ed White to regain the lead at 14-12.

Both teams’ defenses made their presence felt as the half wore on. Commanders’ Josiah Smith recovered a fumble in the end zone, preserving their lead momentarily. Ed White’s defense forced several turnovers on the night reminiscent of the “Lemon Head” defense of the 1990’s.

Riverside’s Richard Pooler then intercepted an Ed White pass, preventing the Commanders from extending their advantage before the half. The competitive spirit on the field underscored the deep rivalry between these teams, both aiming for the district crown and bragging rights that would come with it.

As the third quarter wound down, the Generals’ offense struck again. Running back Zion Hicks surged across the goal line, then followed up with a successful two-point conversion, pushing Riverside ahead 20-14.

But the Commanders’ defense remained relentless, refusing to yield. Late in the fourth quarter, Ed White’s defense delivered a pivotal stop, forcing a fumble from Riverside’s Tae’Shaun Gelsey as he attempted a run up the middle. Commanders’ fans cheered from the stands, sensing that their team might have one last push to turn the game in their favor.

This defensive stand set up the game’s most crucial play. Freshman Rontrez Loyd took the handoff and powered his way into the end zone, clinching the Commanders’ lead for good. With the scoreboard reading 21-20, the Commanders had seized the victory, making Senior Night an unforgettable moment for the team and its fans.

The post-game celebration was filled with pride and emotion, with seniors reflecting on their journey and younger teammates inspired to carry forward the team’s legacy. Ed White’s coaches praised the players for their resilience and dedication throughout the game, emphasizing how this victory was a testament to their teamwork and grit.

The win crowned Ed White as the 4A-4 District champions, ensuring the night would be a cherished memory for the seniors. The Commanders 6-3 will close out their regular season against Baldwin next Friday, eager to maintain their momentum heading into the playoffs. Meanwhile, the 5-5 Riverside Generals, having played their final regular-season game, will have a chance to regroup and prepare for a possible playoff run. We’ll wait to see how the final standings look next week. District winners are automatic, and the top 8 of each region advance.
