Lakeland Fl- “Four years ago, our seniors didn’t win one meet. We didn’t have any girls qualify for State. They hated to lose and did something about it”. Those were the words of coach Sean Coultis after he saw his Fleming Island Golden Eagles bring home the FHSAA Class 2A Girls Olympic Style Weightlifting State Championship this week.
The team tallied 16 points, tying Leesburg whom they shared a state title with. Bradi Johnson won first place in the 119 class with a total of 315. She also won first overall in the traditional style 119 class with a total of 330.

It’s been a great year for the Golden Eagles Girls Weightlifting team. Two signed scholarships to continue their athletic careers in college. Juliana Sosa (Warner Univ), and Layla DeCristofaro (Warner Unv). They won a regional championship this year scoring 36 points and besting traditional style weightlifting champions Middleburg (26), Ridgeview (34), and Choctaw (27).
Fleming Island Girls Weightlifting also won their first ever Clay County Championship with 63 points.
They won 1st Place in Olympic and 2nd in traditional.

Coach Coultis, staff and volunteers should all be commended on a job well done. Said boys 2X weightlifting champion Kevin Reyes, “we got home late from boys regionals (3:20ish am), and he (Coultis) slept at the school for around two hours just so he wouldn’t miss the girls morning lifts (5:30 am)”. It’s that tireless and selfless dedication that goes into crowing a champion. Congratulations Fleming Island.
