High School Football Previews: Cedar Creek Saints

Fall practice for High School starts August 3rd at midnight. Duval Sports will highlight several teams from around the area until the regular season kicks off August 27th.

Cedar Creek Saints

Situated on Jacksonville’s west side just off lane ave, Cedar Creek sits on prime football real estate. With prominent youth football parks such as Lake Shore, Sweet Water and Normandy just minutes from their campus; And talented programs such as Stillwell, Jeb Stuart, and Jefferson Davis middle schools sitting at their back door, there’s reason to be excited about the players they can potentially bring through their doors. Potential is the key word for the saints. There is a lot of potential for this program and the team this year. Head Coach Jamie Gamel, who came over in 2012 has seen the program make steady strides each year. He takes a modest and humble approach to success. ” If we work hard and believe in one another we can go far”. Coach Gamel knows that there may be some obstacles in their way. One obstacle is the high school location. Cedar Creek not only sits on a hot bed of westside talent, but it also sits amongst two Jacksonville power houses in Ed white and Trinity. ” Sitting  between Trinity and Ed White has motivated us” said Gamel. Cedar Creek understands that their success rides on defeating their neighbors in talent acquisition and their district rivals on the field. One coach already believes that time has come.

Offensive Coordinator Ivory Durham has never lacked confidence in his rhetoric, and he boasts that same swagger as the Saints signal caller. ” We will make the playoffs this year, and next year we will be in the state championship game”. Bold statements indeed, but Durham has reason to be confident. Defensive Coordinator Coach Bartley moves over to the offensive side of the ball to assist Durham. Coach Durham touts Bartley as a defensive guru, ” We had the number one defense in the city” , and no doubt believes Bartley can bring that with him over to the offensive side of the ball. Coach Tharpe will remain on the defensive staff.

The youth movement is in full effect at Cedar Creek. Quarterback  Ivory Durham IV (2018) #2 and #1 running back Javon Williams brings a winning pedigree from their former teams at Matthew Gilbert, and MOT Youth Football Association. photo 4#4 Derick Scott (2017) is an all around athlete and expects to play anywhere that the coaches put him. What the Saints lack in size, they make up in athletic ability. Durham IV is a very explosive athlete with a strong arm and offensive mind. In his spare time he is the offensive coordinator for the 10U MOT Cowboys youth football team. Williams is also quick and elusive and can take it the distance any time he touches the ball. Scott has the size to play any position on the Creeks roster. It will be interesting to see where they place this gifted hybrid player.

One thing is for certain, there will be plenty of competition at the skill positions, making for a very competitive August for Coach Gamel and his team.

Cedar Creek finished a respectable 4-6 on the season overall, and 1-3 in the division. University Christian is the team that CC has their eyes set on, but they know they must contend with their other divisional foes as well. This division is heating up and is sure to be competitive once again. We can definitely see why optimism is high off lane ave this year.

Special Thanks to Coach Gamel, Coach Durham and the Cedar Creek Program for inviting Duval Sports!
